The San Antonio Street Art collective is throwing a celebration this Friday to honor the 40th anniversary of cult film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.
While beloved worldwide, the movie has special meaning for San Antonio viewers. The nonstop romp follows man-child Pee-wee Herman as he searches for his stolen bike, which at one point he hears is stowed away in the basement of the Alamo.
Technically, the film was released in theaters in the United States on August 9, 1985, which was 41 years ago — but who’s counting?
“In tribute, our 3rd Friday Artwalk activation is becoming a colorful, chaotic tribute to the legendary Pee-Wee and all his wild and wacky inspiration,” San Antonio Street Art’s Instagram post read.
More than 25 artists will be featured in the collective’s event, which will naturally feature a variety of Pee-wee-themed creations.
Titled “Everybody’s Playhouse,” the gathering also will include a Pee-wee’s Playhouse costume contest.
“Let’s make the mural district FULL of Playhouse characters,” the post reads. However, the organizers also warn the weather will be hot and to plan costumes accordingly.
In addition to art and costumes, the wacky get-together will feature food vendors peddling “retro snacks” as well as music heavy on nostalgia for Pee-wee’s high camp.
San Antonio Street Art is a nonprofit transforming San Antonio’s East Side through what it calls the Largest Outdoor Gallery in Texas, a collection of vibrant, large-scale outdoor murals. The initiative is supported by local officials such as District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, whose city council district includes the DREAM Mural Arts District.
The nonprofit, which is focused on advocacy and fair-wage work for artists, was founded by street artist Shek Vega. The legendary local muralist is also the founder of the East Side’s Gravelmouth Gallery, a contemporary gallery celebrating San Antonio street art since its founding in 2010.
