The Gunter Hotel is highlighting local and regional singer-songwriters with an August series called The Studio Lounge Sessions.
As part of the series, the artists will perform and speak about the process they use when they compose songs. The shows will take place from 7-9 p.m. every Wednesday in August at the hotel’s Gunter Studio. Tickets for each session run $15.
Performers featured in the series include “South Texas soul” artist David Jimenez, Cooper Greenberg (of Favorite Son and The Texases), neo-soul singer-songwriter Chavela and indie songwriter Mikey Vibe (also of indie maximalist group Michael J. and the Foxes).
Each artist has been asked to curate their evening by inviting songwriter friends to share the stage for a conversation about the creative process.
Additional participants include Caroline Hale, Jennifer Foster, Brandon Padier, Jordan Bryant, Kassandra Ayala and Elena Lopez.
The goal is to create “a setting designed for listeners to hear not only the songs, but the stories behind them,” Michael Carrillo, who goes by the stage name Mikey Vibe, said in a statement. Carrillo will perform in the round with two of his friends — Jack Mitts and Brian Cunningham.
“The format creates an intimate listening-room experience where the conversation is just as important as the music itself,” Carrillo added.
Gunter Hotel officials are staging the series as another way of honoring the building’s musical roots. In 1936, legendary bluesman Robert Johnson recorded some of his best-known songs, including “Dust My Broom” and “Crossroad Blues,” in Room 414 of the hotel.
Each guest room in the Gunter also features a record player so visitors can enjoy the hotel’s vinyl lending library of nearly 1,000 records, curated with the help of onsite Vinyl Ambassadors.
