Celebrated San Antonio-tied visual artist Vincent Valdez has received a 2026 Fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, which includes $800,000 in unrestricted funding.

MacArthur awards, commonly referred to as “genius grants,” recognize individuals who exhibit extraordinary creativity and impact in their respective fields. Up to 20 annual fellows receive $800,000 in funding paid in installments over five years, allowing them the freedom and flexibility to explore their individual practices without the pressure of financial stress.

Valdez, who splits his time between Houston and San Antonio, is a master of photorealistic painting and drawing who began his career painting public mural projects across San Antonio at the age of 9.

Stylistically, his work is representative of Gen X Chicano artists, whose art straddles the line between hyperrealism and conceptualism while exploring themes of social justice. The work is provocative, shifting from the political to the personal with graceful ease.

In addition, Valdez is the inaugural artist-in-residence at Alamo Colleges District (ACD) in San Antonio, where his latest exhibition, La Línea/The Line: Works by Vincent Valdez, opens on Wednesday, Oct. 7 and includes paintings, drawings and sculpture created over the past two decades.

The reception for Valdez’s latest San Antonio exhibition begins at 5:30 p.m. at the ACD ACCESS Common Ground Gallery, located at 2222 N. Alamo St.
