After nearly four years of what Whataburger officials described as “fan requests, heartfelt DMs and a bit of begging on social media,” the San Antonio-based drive-thru institution is bringing back its Pico de Gallo Burger for a limited-time basis. The spicy fan fave will become available again Tuesday, June 3, the latest of several bygone items Whataburger has trotted out as part of its 75th-anniversary celebration, company officials said Wednesday.
The Pico de Gallo Burger, which made its debut in 2020, tops one of the chain’s never-frozen beef patties — or a crispy Whatachick’n patty — with house-made pico de gallo, melted pepper jack cheese and a cilantro-lime sauce.
“The Pico de Gallo Burger brings together bold flavors that reflect the vibrant heritage of Texas, while still delivering that unmistakable Whataburger experience,” company CEO Debbie Stroud said in a statement. “This isn’t just about a fan-favorite burger — it’s about celebrating the delicious food and community spirit that have shaped us over the last 75 years. And like everything we serve, it’s made fresh, hot, and just how you like it — because quality will always be at the heart of who we are.”
To celebrate the South Texas-inspired burger’s return, Whataburger launched La Gran Whatalucha, a four-part social media series featuring real-life luchadores hurling each other around the ring for the custom Whatalucha championship belt.
Whataburger officials didn’t say how long the specialty sando will remain available, but they warned that “just like a legendary wrestler’s surprise comeback, this burger won’t stay in the ring for long.”
