Five of San Antonio’s most beloved, but sadly shuttered, restaurants — Feast, Cookhouse, Sandbar, The Monterey, and Gwendolyn — are making a highly anticipated return this August, each for one night only.
A dinner series dubbed Revival is a charitable effort to support people affected by the catastrophic Central Texas flooding. Spearheaded by restaurateur and Empty Stomach Group CEO Chad Carey (Hot Joy, Barbaro, Rumble), the series is nearly sold out.
Each dinner will be hosted at Michelin-recognized Cullum’s Attaboy, 111 Kings Ct. All proceeds will benefit the Kerrville County Flood Relief Fund.
“We felt like these five defunct restaurants coming back to raise money for an important cause was a good reason to knock some dust off the bottle,” Carey told the Current.
As of publication, only a few tickets remain for the final event in the series — the Gwendolyn dinner, set for Sunday, Aug. 24. Tickets are priced at $155 per person and include a one-night-only coursed menu prepared by the restaurant’s original chef,
Michael Sohocki.
For the Gwendolyn installment, that means a custom experience crafted by Sohocki, who now runs Kimura and Il Forno. The other, sold-out dinners will take place Wednesday, Aug. 20 through Saturday, Aug. 23.
Menus haven’t been released as of press time. However, Carey teased what guests could expect via an announcement on his Instagram page, writing, “Every one of these chefs is going to BRING THE PAIN. These dinners are going to be special & and we’re throwing our hearts into making every night massively delicious and fun.”
Carey also credited Sohocki along with Stefan Bowers (Feast), Pieter Sypesteyn (Cookhouse) and Andrew Weismann (Sandbar) for their assistance in reviving their old concepts.
“We are absorbing all the expenses, so buying a ticket means every penny goes to charities,” Carey said.
Carey’s restaurant group was behind The Monterey, an American-style eatery that called South St. Mary’s Street home for five years until it shuttered in 2015.
So, does Carey plan to make the Revival series a recurring event for foodies who missed out this time around?
“This is a one-and-done thing,” he told Current, noting he has no further plans for similar “nostalgia fests.”
