Colorado-based Rush Bowls is bringing its health-conscious snack shops to the Alamo City.
The fast-expanding chain reached a deal with a local franchisee to open five units, the first of which is expected to launch on the far West Side next summer, according to company officials and state regulatory filings.
Similar to the Nékter Juice Bar chain and locally owned operations such as Revolución Coffee + Juice, Rush Bowls serves up frozen treats made with pureed açaí berries, a high-antioxidant superfood. Diners customize the colorful bowls, which are both sugar- and dye-free, with toppings such as coconut, fresh fruit and honey.
While the bowls account for the bulk of the chain’s business, its menu also includes smoothies, cold-brews and treats for visiting pooches.
The first San Antonio Rush Bowls shop will be at 14124 Culebra Road #114 near the Talley Road intersection, a recent Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing shows. Finish-out on the 1,200-square-foot location will run about $90,000 and wrap up next May, documents also show.
Rush Bowls officer John Maggio declined to name company’s San Antonio franchisee and also passed on revealing an opening date for the first store, saying the company doesn’t like to get out ahead of its launch in a new market.
Maggio added that the timetable for opening five stores here is up in the air since it depends on the speed with which the franchisee can generate a clientele. The chain has around 60 stores, and its website lists dozens more in the “coming soon” stage.
“We’re looking for franchisees who are locally engaged so they can make the business work,” Maggio said. “We have don’t have a household name like McDonalds or Chipotle, so the franchisee has to build connections.”
