A Los Angeles-based hospitality group behind an array of Asian-style dining concepts is expanding into Texas with the opening of its first Wagyu Factory restaurant in San Antonio.
Chubby Group will debut the new all-you-can-eat concept in mid-June at 11745 I-10, Suite 414, near the Medical Center. The unit will be chain’s fifth location following three in Southern California and one in Seattle.
The San Antonio Wagyu Factory is taking over an existing restaurant operated by Gen Korean BBQ House, a chain Chubby Group is in the process of acquiring, company officials said.
Wagyu Factory restaurants specialize in serving premium wagyu beef, prized for its marbling and melt-in-your mouth lusciousness. Customers can cook the meat themselves on in-table grills and make dining selections from a large and varied buffet featuring sushi, hot dishes, desserts and more.
“Our vision for Wagyu Factory was to take premium wagyu and make it approachable, exciting and endlessly satisfying,” Chubby Group co-founder David Zhao said in an emailed statement. “We wanted to create more than just a meal. Wagyu Factory is about discovery, connection and creating memories around the table. We are especially excited to bring this concept to Texas for the first time with our San Antonio opening.”
As part of Chubby Group’s Texas expansion, the business also will open Chubby Cattle restaurants in San Antonio and Austin. That Japanese-inspired chain, which specializes in all-you-can-eat wagyu barbecue, will launch the Austin store this summer and a unit in San Antonio’s North Star Mall sometime next year, officials said.
Although Chubby Group has holdings in Chicago and Atlanta, most of its 40 restaurants are on the West and East coasts. Its other brands include The X Pot, Niku X and Mikiya, according to its website.
