Few topics spark more passionate debate in San Antonio than breakfast tacos, which is exactly why putting together this list led to more than a few spirited arguments in the Current newsroom.
Every Tex-Mex obsessive on staff had a favorite spot they swore belonged in the top tier, and not everyone walked away happy. Still, after plenty of deliberation — and more taco runs than our cardiologists would recommend — we narrowed it down to the 25 breakfast taco destinations every San Antonian should know.

Little Taco Factory

From juicy barbacoa to delightful bean and cheese tacos cradled in pillowy flour tortillas, this “factory” manufactures some of the best breakfast options for taco lovers. The quick counter service and friendly vibe are also selling points.

Garcia’s Mexican Food

This Fredericksburg Road hole in the wall serves up breakfast tacos it’s won raves from both the New York Times and comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias. And plenty of locals swear by them too.

Con Huevos offers traditional tacos with creative twists and a selection of vegetarian and vegan options. Their patio offers an incredible view of the San Antonio skyline and iconic murals surround the building.

Pete’s Tako House

Be prepared for a wait at this downtown Tex-Mex destination, and that’s because the food and service are exemplary. Go for the chorizo y papas on a fresh and hot flour tortilla, and you will experience breakfast taco bliss.

Maria’s Cafe

This tiny, family-owned eatery is 600 square feet of heaven for folks who crave real-deal San Antonio breakfast tacos. Despite its under-the-radar vibes, the place has even earned praise from New York Times food critic Priya Krishna who called out the Minion taco with its “smoky shreds of brisket and creamy-crunchy migas” as one of the 25 best dishes she ate that year.

Mendez Cafe

This tiny South Side neighborhood spot may not look like much, but regulars are willing to wait for tables because the tacos are that amazing. Even best-selling author Shea Serrano is big-time fan. The bold and rich carne guisada is enough to win just about anybody over.

Eddie’s Taco House

This homespun business with two locations delivers big on Tex-Mex flavors and great service, and the breakfast tacos are real standouts, especially the spicy chilaquiles a la Mexicana. Fluffy tortillas, great fillings and early bird specials add up to something special.

Los Ajos Mexican Grill

The homemade tortillas at this popular far West Side spot are worth the drive, especially when stuffed with fluffy eggs and crisp-fried potatoes.

El Sabrosito Mexican Restaurant

In 2024, a car crashed into this Converse treasure, temporarily shutting its doors. Thankfully, it’s open again and serving up killer breakfast tacos to Judson High students and others who live and work in the area. The lengua guisada taco is not to be missed.

Charro El Tio #2

When Hildebrand Avenue staple Taco Taco shut down, it left a breakfast-sized hole many San Antonians’ hearts. Good thing the building’s latest tenant, Charro El Tio #2 has able stepped in. In addition to the Tex-Mex standards, its big and filling breakfast tacos include south-of-the-border standouts such as chicharron en salsa and nopal con hue.

Tlahco Mexican Kitchen

Tlahco Mexican Kitchen’s focus on authentic south-of-the-border ingredients and cooking techniques offers a nice shift away from typical Tex-Mex, and that certainly applies to its breakfast tacos. Go for the rajas con queso or the cochinita pibil for a fresh way to pep up your morning.

El Milagrito Cafe

This St. Mary’s Strip staple has long been a great weekend hangover cure. The breakfast tacos are exceptional, and the barbacoa can’t be beat, especially when augmented with sliced avocado, onion and cilantro.

This San Antonio-based three-restaurant chain is a standout for its speciality breakfast tacos, which are big, bold and filling. Check out the brisket and egg a la Mexicana for a real taste of Tex-Mex, or go for the Trash Can, if you can’t make up your mind and want a bit of everything.

Plantaqueria

How’d a vegan restaurant end up on this list? Because their breakfast tacos are that good. There’s no meat involved, but you’re not sacrificing flavor at Plantaueria. Speciality breakfast tacos such as La Ranchera, made with potatoes and pico de gallo in salsa ranchera and grilled nopales, are the fresh and flavorful real deal.

Taco House

Known for its towering blue sign and order-at-the-counter system, the restaurant consistently delivers, whether you’re looking for a delicious huevo con nopales to slather with fiery green salsa or a barbacoa taco to pair with your Big Red.

Rosa’s Kitchen

Woman-owned and operated across three food truck locations, Rosa’s Kitchen stays consistent to its mission — an extensive menu of scratchmade, affordable breakfast tacos. With many locals dubbing it a hidden gem, Authentic Tacos San Miguel Allende keeps things straightforward with flavorful tacos at affordable prices, like its three-breakfast taco special for only $5.55.

Naco Mexican

Located within the SA Yacht Club near the Pearl district, Naco Mexican is a love letter to the Mexican roots of its founders. The Original Donut Shop

One of the worst-kept secrets for breakfast tacos, The Original Donut Shop has been a cult-favorite among locals for 72 years and counting. Get there early, though. The lines are long for a reason. A San Antonio staple since 2003, Taqueria Datapoint has a location in just about every neighborhood in the city. Their extensive list of breakfast tacos are an option all day — try the jamon con huevo with Mexican-style beef and the chorizo con huevo for an affordable dose of protein.

Tacos on the Street

With the launch of its first U.S. location in San Antonio, Tacos on the Street has brought a much needed dose of authentic Mexican tacos and cuisine to the Stone Oak area for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Charcoal-grilled meats are paired with fresh handmade tortillas with a complimentary side of genuine hospitality at the vibrant, blue-hued storefront.

Frank’s Tacos

Another underrated spot for breakfast tacos, Frank’s keeps it simple but expertly executed, and most of the breakfast taco options are just $1.99. Keep an eye open for the red food truck on Loop 1604 for a good deal. Customers rave about the carne guisada.
