San Antonio’s barbecue scene took center stage on national television Monday night as Michelin-recognized pitmasters Esaul and Grecia Ramos took home the first win on the new Food Network program Pitmasters.

The 2M Smokehouse co-owners faced off against eight other two-person teams from renowned barbecue joints nationwide. The San Antonio husband-and-wife took home the win during Monday’s season finale, landing a $30,000 grand prize.

Locally, Esaul is known as the pitmaster mastermind at 2M Smokehouse, 2731 S. WW White Road, while Grecia bakes up the sweet desserts from scratch. She also owns boutique bakery Baked by Chef Grecia Ramos in Castroville.

“Winning Pitmasters still doesn’t feel real,” Esaul and Grecia said in a joint statement shared with the Current.

“We came into this competition as a pitmaster and a pastry chef from San Antonio, ready to bring our two worlds together and represent ourselves, our food and our city the best way we knew how,” the couple added. “To walk away as the first-ever Pitmasters champions means more than we can put into words.”

The Ramoses also gave a shoutout to the San Antonio community and their own employees for the constant support. Locals rallied on a weekly basis to watch the 2M team smoke the competition, with a large crowd cheering them on during the triumphant finale.

“San Antonio showed up for Team Ramos in such a huge way, and this win belongs to them, too,” the couple said. “More than anything, we hope this win represents the creativity, culture and talent that exists right here in our city. We’re so proud to bring this one home to San Antonio.”
