I'm not really a cereal person. There was a brief period in college when all I ate was Fruit Loops because I swore the colored little o's were differently flavored — no, I wasn't high — but, that was a slightly rebellious phase where my biggest indiscretion was eating extremely sugary cereal. Who wouldn't burn out on cereal after that?

But when a cereal bar opens in your neck of the woods, you've got to check it out. And for both my visits Joseph E. Coffee has fit a very relaxed bill. Opened by brothers Isaac and Adrian Cummings, the shop sits catty-corner from Southtown 101 on South St. Mary's Street. Though it gets the job done as far as décor goes — the brothers exhibit artwork by local artists on a revolving basis — the shop is otherwise muted.

When it comes to coffee, the brothers are bagging their own signature blends (Opulence, a breakfast blend; Majestic, their Colombian roast and Black Gold, their Italian roast) that are roasted by a third party. Joseph E. Coffee carries the regular line of coffee and espresso drinks, along with nitro brew, pour over and Chemex varities. I've not really paid enough attention to the coffee because I've been too busy stuffing my face with cereal.

If you've been hoping to nerd out with a bowl of Star Wars cereal at breakfast, but don't want to commit to buying an entire box, JEC has you covered. The cereal menu carries 35 varieties — for now — and seven milks to choose from. The options get a bit overwhelming with the addition of syrup flavors — 11 all together. But the cereal treat won't come cheap, and it really shouldn't (if bowls were cheap then you'd become a real cereal killer). At $2.50 for a small and $4 for a large bowl (and they do mean large), you're allowed multiple cereal choices. At 50 cents for milk, and another .50-.75 cents for fruit and nut toppings, your bowl has the potential to get pricy.

Know your combinations of choice beforehand or commit to the early favorites. The Adrian, found on the "not-so-secret menu," mixes Fruit Loops (my jam), Oops, All Berries and strawberry milk with sliced strawberries. Now if I could only get them to start playing Saturday morning cartoons ...
