Work crews on Tuesday took down the iconic Jolly Jack statue outside the original Sea Island Shrimp House location near North Star Mall to give it much-needed repairs, the San Antonio-based seafood chain said in a Facebook post.

The 10-foot-tall fisherman in a striped shirt has greeted guests at the dining spot for the past 60 years. The mascot will be reinforced with fiberglass and undergo restoration work at the hands of manufacturing and design company Christopher Stuart Cast Stone.

The repairs are expected to take eight weeks, according to Sea Island’s Facebook post.

“We’re committed to making sure this sea legend gets the care he deserves so he can continue watching over Sea Island for years to come,” the post added.

Estimated to weigh 1,000 pounds, the statue was created in 1965 by San Antonio artist Antonio Medina and has stood watch over the seafood restaurant’s parking lot ever since.

As of press time, Sea Island’s clip of the mascot’s temporary removal has garnered more than 100 likes and 50 comments.

“Maybe after 60 years he needed a little nip [and] tuck,” user Lori Prince Brown wrote.
