San Antonio’s oldest la Madeleine location, a Broadway corridor fixture launched in 1992, has ceased operation.

A representative of the French-style cafe and bakery chain confirmed the closure during a Thursday morning visit by the Current to the restaurant at 4820 Broadway. Work crews were busy removing furniture from the nearly empty location.

The man, who declined to identify himself, said he had no additional comment on the closure and referred any inquiries to the Houston-based franchisee that operated the store. He declined to say how to reach the franchisee.

“Merci beaucoup for all the magnifique memories!” a poster in the location’s front window stated. The sign offered addresses for la Madeleine’s four other San Antonio-area locations.

The demise of the Broadway la Madeleine comes amid a rash of other year-end closures by Alamo City dining fixtures, from wine and oyster bar Go Fish to barbecue staple Dignowity Meats.

Founded in Dallas in 1983, la Madeleine has more than 80 locations in Texas and other U.S. states, according to its website.
