Downtown-area lunch staple Cypress Cafe has closed a year after being forced to relocate out of its longtime roost in the basement of office building Cypress Tower.

In Instagram posts shared Tuesday and Wednesday, Cypress Cafe owner Mimi Lee revealed that the restaurant, which relocated to the Lombrano Food Hall after leaving Cypress Tower, has closed “indefinitely” and that she’s been hospitalized with unspecified health problems. She added that she’s awaiting tests.

“I would appreciate it if you could pray for me,” Lee wrote. “Thank you for loving our Cypress Cafe.”

Cypress Cafe opened in 2002, primarily serving sandwiches to workers inside Cypress Tower, 1222 N. Main St. However, it developed a larger lunchtime following after Lee and her husband began incorporating traditional Korean dishes such as japchae and bibimbap to the menu.

The restaurant was forced to relocate in May 2024 after Cypress Tower’s primary tenant, San Antonio-based grocer H-E-B, took over more space to accommodate its employees.

Cypress Cafe ultimately reopened inside Lombrano Food Hall, 4275 Lombrano St., which hosts a variety of ghost kitchens specializing in delivery and pickup orders.
