More than 15 San Antonio-area culinary teams will duke it out later this month at the inaugural Norteño Fest to decide who makes the best carne asada.
The family-friendly event, held at the grounds of the San Antonio Charro Association, 6126 Padre Drive, will celebrate Northern Mexican cuisine and culture with food, music and more. The gathering kicks off at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, and ends at 7 p.m.
Presented by Mexican steakhouse Tu Asador and sponsored by the Current, Norteño Fest will let attendees vote for their favorite carne asada and discada grilled up by the competing teams. Those interested in competing can sign up online by March 21.
“At Tu Asador, carne asada is more than just food — it’s a tradition that brings people together. This competition is a celebration of that passion, where the best grill masters showcase their skills, flavors and love for the Norteño culture,” Regina Gonzalez, the restaurant’s co-owner and co-founder said in a statement.
Norteño Fest will include live music from Grupo Revolución, Mariachi Los Caporales & Bazan Folklorico and Grupo Tan Tan along with folkloric dance performances, a petting zoo, face painting and pony rides at a designated kids zone. Attendees also will be able to watch traditional Mexican bull and horseback riding.
Additionally, Norteño Fest will feature onsite food and drink vendors, including steak samples from Tu Asador. The local eatery recently opened up its second location at 1662 Encino Rio in addition to its original Castle Hills location, 8055 W. Ave., #125.
Adult ticket prices for Norteño Fest range from $70 general admission tickets to $85 for VIP. Advance tickets are available online. Kids 12 and under get in to the event for free.
