During a site visit during Tuesday operating hours, the restaurant was shuttered, and a recorded phone message said the line had been changed, disconnected or was no longer in service. During the Current’s visit, several customers arrived to find the doors locked and the dining room empty.
The Current also reached out to Phoenix Chinese Cafe via its social media channels and got no response by press time. What’s more, the business’ website no longer appeared to be in operation.
Ren and Lisa Wu opened Phoenix Chinese Cafe in the early 2000s to share the Cantonese cuisine of their native Guangzhou, China, with San Antonio diners. New management took over the cafe in late 2024, according to a social media post.
Phoenix Chinese Cafe was known for low-cost lunch and dinner options, with a menu offering classic Chinese dishes including sesame beef, Peking duck and steamed pork buns.
Although the business was closed during Tuesday’s on-site visit, a sign on the check-in counter was still visible from the window: “Happiness is a kitchen full of family.”
