In a rare bit of recent good news for San Antonio’s craft beer scene, Mad Pecker Brewing Co. shared plans Tuesday on social media about a surprise reopening.
The 10-year-old brewpub announced its closure in late March, blaming slipping beer sales and competition from chain restaurants. The owners also told the Current customer traffic never fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I am beyond grateful to announce Mad Pecker Brewing Co. will be re-opening its doors soon,” co-owners Jason and Errika Gonzales said Tuesday in a post shared from a newly created Mad Pecker Instagram account.
Citing “incredible support” and “countless stories shared by customers, family and friends about how much Mad Pecker meant to them,” as motivation, the co-founders said the business will reopen at 6025 Tezel Road, #122, the location where’s operated for the past decade.
The couple said they’re working toward an opening date, adding that they plan “well deserved improvements for the taproom.” The message didn’t include details about whether the business had obtained new investors or financing.
The Current was unable to reach the Gonzaleses before press time.
Jason and Errika Gonzales launched Mad Pecker in 2015 after working out recipes for beers and ales in their garage. The brewpub offered as many as a dozen house-produced brews along with pizzas, burgers and other pub fare.
The brewery’s promisreturn comes after a wash of lousy news for San Antonio’s craft beer industry.
Busted Sandal Brewing Co., Weathered Souls Brewing Co., Man Overboard Brewing Co. and other breweries have shut down due to rising costs and changing consumer tastes. In February, the city’s largest independent brewer, Alamo Beer Co., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.
