Less than a month after revealing plans for a $30 million cinema and entertainment complex on U.S. Highway 281 North, San Antonio-based theater operator Santikos Entertainment divulged that a similar project is in the works in far West Bexar County, the Business Journal reports.
The company’s latest multi-screen movie house development will be on 20 acres northeast of Potranco Road and State Highway 211, according to the publication. In addition to the cinema, the complex will include a bar, gaming areas and retail.
Santikos officials told the Business Journal they’ve been eyeing a westward expansion for some time, citing the area’s rapid outward growth. However, unlike the chain’s pending development on U.S. 281, the West Side center won’t include residential units.
“Every data point we have, whether it be per-capita income, the planned rooftops under various phases of development, all of it just points to this is a place where we’re going to want to be,” Santikos Entertainment CEO Blake Hastings told the news outlet.
The Business Journal’s report didn’t include a dollar value for the West Side development, nor did it reveal the number of screens planned for the theater. Officials didn’t provide a timetable for its opening either.
Santikos, founded more than a century ago, operates roughly 30 theaters across Texas and seven other states, eight of them in San Antonio. The company tripled its size through a 2023 acquisition of 17 cinemas from VSS-Southern Theaters LLC, a New York-based private equity firm.
