For those who didn’t get enough of Black Flag’s new Gen Z-dominated lineup last year at Paper Tiger, the seminal punk band will return to San Antonio for a Friday, Oct. 30, show at the Espee.
Founding guitarist Greg Ginn took heat last year for revamping Black Flag — a band formed in the late ’70s — by hiring on three musicians a fraction of his age: female vocalist Max Zanelly, bassist David Rodriguez and drummer Bryce Weston.
While detractors blasted the band as “Baby Black Flag” and suggested Ginn made the hires because he was looking for players who would work cheap, online videos show the kids delivering energetic takes on the material. Indeed, a press release put out by the band last year said the retooled lineup was even writing new material together, “building on their signature sound while embracing new influences brought in by the latest members.”
We’ll see whether there’s enough curiosity to fill the Espee, the 3,000-capacity outdoor venue in St. Paul Square.
$33-$34, 7 p.m., The Espee, 1174 E Commerce St., atgentertainment.com.
