Best known for providing the intro music for Portlandia, the beloved show making fun of hipsterdom, Washed Out has become strangely iconic for millennials.
Former Current Music Editor Matt Stieb explained the phenomenon a few years back when Washed Out headlined the Maverick Music Festival: “Oddly enough, Washed Out has not only eclipsed the genre of chillwave, it’s become a touchstone act for the millennial generation in the way that Steely Dan is a zeitgeist artist for dads of millennials. And much like Steely Dan, Washed Out totally rules, though with serious potential to sound dated in 20 years.”
