A red brick home in the Monte Vista Historic District has hit the market for just under $1 million, and one of its former owners was Rudolph Quinones, founder of beloved San Antonio dining spot Jacala Mexican Restaurant, newspaper archives show.
Jacala, founded in 1949, grew into an Alamo City Tex-Mex institution before being destroyed last year in a fire. Quinones died in the early 2000s after spending decades running the eatery.
We’re guessing Quinones’ one-time home looks significantly different from when he and his family resided in it during the 1960s.
Photos from the sales listing make it clear that recent renovations have retained the elegance of the 1923 structure’s original features, such as its interior woodwork, while adding contemporary touches like a massive and airy kitchen with distinctive red and white tile.
The two-story residence boasts three bedrooms and three baths along with a detached garage, a casita and a dipping pool situated right off the kitchen patio. The property even possesses that most unusual of rooms for San Antonio: a basement.
