The Bexar County Democratic Party elected a new leader, former Air Force Deputy Undersecretary Michelle LoweSolis, in a special election Thursday, the Express-News reports.
LoweSolis will replace Chairwoman Monica Alácantara, who resigned days after the Nov. 5 election, which held disaster for Democrats nationwide and in Bexar County. LoweSolis defeated Theresa “Terri” Flores Lopez, a former public school assistant principal, in an 80-79 vote.
Lopez had been Alácantara’s preferred pick for the position, according to the Express-News.
LoweSolis’ ascent in the local party comes after Bexar County Democrats suffered embarrassing defeats in two critical races during the general election earlier this month.
Some political analysts believed the race for Texas House District was a strong one for Dems. Even though Republican incumbent John Lujan said during a radio interview that he’d force a hypothetical daughter to carry her rapist’s baby to term, he still beat Democratic Challenger Kristian Carranza by more than 3 points.
The outcome in the traditionally moderate Texas House District 121 wasn’t much better. There, Republican Marc LaHood, a San Antonio criminal defense attorney who ran a failed race for Bexar County DA, defeated Democrat Laurel Swift by more than 5%.
LoweSolis graduated from San Antonio’s Trinity University with a business degree in 1994 before joining AirForce’s civilian service, where she would spend more than 30 years, according to the U.S. Air Force’s website.
She returned to San Antonio in 2021, where she began working with the Mothers Against Greg Abbott Political Action Committee, the daily reports.
