Following Tuesday’s disastrous election for Texas Democrats, Monica Alcantara has stepped down as chair of the Bexar County Democratic Party.

Alcantara announced her immediate resignation in a Friday Facebook post, stating that she wanted to “serve the voters of Bexar County in a different manner.”

Alcantara’s resignation has conspicuously occurred in tandem with the resignation of Gilberto Hinojosa, the chair of the Texas Democratic Party writ large, who signed her resignation as one of his final acts in office.

Local Democrats voted Alcantara into the position for the past four election cycles.

In her resignation letter, Alcantara touted accomplishments during her tenure, including raising more than $2 million in support of Democratic outreach efforts, overseeing 16 elections, helping elect Democrats to nearly every county-wide office and implementing strategies to maintain San Antonio as a Democratic stronghold.

Alcantara’s letter also recommends members of the County Executive Committee elect Terri Flores Lopez as the next county chair. An emergency CEC meeting has been called for November 21 to name a replacement.
