In a disappointing move to Kyle-enthusiasts, the South Austin suburb of Kyle this week said it won’t hold its annual gathering of people whose first name is Kyle, KUT public radio reports.

“It takes a lot. It’s a huge endeavor. We have a ton of volunteers,” Kyle Assistant Director of Communications Rachel Sonnier told the Austin station. “We want to give plenty of time for promotions to get more Kyles out since we didn’t quite meet the record last year.”

Every May since 2017, the city of Kyle has tried to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people with the same first name.

The closest the city got was in 2023 when nearly 1,500 Kyles gathered in one of its public parks. But, alas, the Kyles were no match for the 2,325 Ivans who converged in 2017 on the village of Krupres, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the current record holder.

Indeed, the number of Kyles congregating last year at the annual celebration in Kyle took a significant drop. Only 700 showed up.

Despite the setback, Sonnier said that the city hasn’t given up yet.

“We’re gonna hold off and plan it for another year down the line,” she told KUT.
