City Councilman John Courage broke the silence yesterday on his rumored departure from the mayoral race, citing his age, health and his wife’s recent retirement as factors.
In a lengthy message shared via social media platform X, the District 9 councilman said he felt the need to share his reasons for stepping back from the race “openly and transparently.”
“While I remain passionate about public service, I must also acknowledge the realities of my age and health,” Courage wrote. “When I decided to run, I was 72 years old. By the time the next mayoral term concludes, I would be 78 years old. While I am fortunate to feel well today, I have encountered some health challenges that require greater attention to ensure my continued well-being.”
Courage didn’t elaborate on what those health concerns are. However, he added that his wife’s recent retirement weighed on the decision.
“This time of transition has reinforced the importance of prioritizing our health and cherishing the moments we have together,” he said.
The Express-News was first to report Courage’s intent to drop from the race, last week citing sources familiar with his plans. However, it wasn’t until Monday afternoon that the councilman officially confirmed the subject of that speculation.
Courage is in his fourth and final term and can’t run again. Although his time on the dais expires in May, he said he remains “fully committed to serving the residents of District 9.”
Courage’s statement brings to an end a mayoral campaign that began in January. He was the first candidate to announce his run for mayor this cycle and is the first to formally exit the race.
Others who have officially declared their candidacy include District 4 Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia, District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez and former District 10 Councilman Clayton Perry.
Tech entrepreneur Beto Altamirano and former Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos also have said they plan to file paperwork to run, while District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda also is expected to formally unveil her candidacy soon.
