A dress worn by a local woman at San Antonio’s Muertos Fest over the weekend memorializing those who died at the hands of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is going viral on social media.
The black dress, created and worn by Almeda Cindy, had the words “ICE Victims” and “Never Forgotten” on the front. The names and faces of people killed by ICE were stitched along its skirt.
Individuals memorialized on Cindy’s dress include Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti, Minneapolis mother of three Nicole Good and Keith Porter Jr., a Black man who was shot and killed by an off-duty ICE agent in Los Angeles. Pretti, Good and Porter were all U.S. citizens.
A video of the dress from Muertos Fest — billed as the nation’s largest Día de los Muertos celebration — posted on Instagram by local influencer Siempre San Antonio has racked up nearly 100,000 likes and 3,000 comments as of press time.
“Breaks my heart to see the portraits of the victims of ICE,” Instagram user @jacqui0021 commented. “Really sad, but a beautiful tribute to them. May their souls rest in peace.”
“Too many innocent people who died for no reason,” Instagram user @shy_sweet1439 added.
Cindy, the creator of the dress, didn’t respond to the Current’s request for comment.
CBS News reports that at least nine people have been shot and killed by ICE since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, while at least 13 others have been injured. At least 59 other people have died while in migrant detention facilities, according to news outlet Democracy Now!
