San Antonio Independent School District’s Board of Trustees on Monday unanimously approved Toni Thompson to take over as the district’s interim superintendent.

Previously serving as SAISD’s chief of staff, Thompson will replace outgoing Superintendent Jaimie Aquino, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

“We are truly excited to have Tony serve in this capacity,” SAISD Board President Alicia Sebastian said in a statement. “She has been a tremendous asset to this district for a number of years. What better way to honor one of our own?”

Despite Aquino initially saying he would retire in January 2027, Thompson will take over his duties on July 1. He will stay on the district’s payroll as a consultant until next January.

Thompson will serve as superintendent until the district finds a permanent hire. Although her role will be temporary, she nonetheless takes over at a challenging time for SAISD.

Facing a $46 million budget deficit, SAISD recently voted to close two schools and hand over another three campuses to the controversial charter school operator Third Futures in an effort to stave off a district-wide takeover by the Texas Education Agency.
