In a home double-header that marked Texas A&M-San Antonio’s basketball debut, the school’s women’s basketball team defeated Southern University at New Orleans 89-73, while the men’s team lost 86-75 to the same visiting school.

Respectively, Evelyn Lorenzo and Journee Phillips led the women’s and men’s teams in scoring. Lorenzo racked up 20 points for the Jaguars while Phillips bagged 30.

Between games, TAMUSA honored Texas Sen. Pete Flores with a presentation for sponsoring a bill allowing the university to charge a fee to fund its basketball program.

“All I want is the kids on the south side of the interstate to have the same things as the kids on the other side,” Flores said during the presentation.

Men’s basketball coach Chris Dial expressed disappointment with the final score of his team’s game but was proud of its hustle, according to the university.

“When I was a kid, you couldn’t have gone to an indoor men’s and women’s basketball event on this side of town. It just didn’t exist,” Dial said.

The women’s team will play its next game Monday at Lamar University, while the men will play at Texas Southern University on Wednesday.
