The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on Friday demanded Tarrant County GOP Chair Bo French be removed for tweeting out a poll this week asking whether Muslims or Jews pose a bigger threat to the United States.
“A poll asking Americans to choose whether Jews or Muslims are the ‘bigger threat’ is not only offensive – it’s dangerous,” CAIR-Texas Board Member John Floyd said in a statement. “It fuels suspicion and division during a time when both Jewish and Muslim communities are facing heightened threats across the country.”
In its statement, CAIR-Texas referenced the Current’s reporting on French’s poll.
French’s poll, which has faced backlash on social media, comes at a time when 70% of Jewish adults have said they’ve experienced antisemitism online. At the same time, CAIR recorded 8,658 complaints about anti-Muslim and anti-Arab incidents last year – the highest number since the advocacy group began collecting data in 1996.
“This shameful and irresponsible poll is a blatant act of antisemitism and Islamophobic bigotry,” CAIR-Austin Operations Manager Shaimaa Zayan said in a statement. “We expect elected officials and politicians to foster unity and lead with wisdom, not to promote suspicion and division.”
CAIR-Texas is demanding French be removed from his position and that the poll, which remains up on social media platform X, be taken down.
The Tarrant County GOP hasn’t responded to the Current’s request for comment on French’s poll.
It’s not the first time French, who was elected to lead the Tarrant County GOP in 2023, has faced backlash for posting offensive remarks online.
Last year, French drew condemnation from other high-profile Tarrant County GOP officials after he repeatedly used demeaning language directed at LGBTQ+ people and those with intellectual disabilities in social media posts.
