Actress and activist Jane Fonda and her climate PAC, JanePAC, endorsed Democratic candidate Katy Padilla Stout in her race to represent a South Texas district that stretches from San Antonio to El Paso.
In a video posted to Instagram Monday, Fonda’s environmental PAC also took aim at Padilla Stout’s opponent, gun YouTuber Brandon Herrera. The clip blasted the Republican as a “guy with an AK-47 display as his zoom background” who says “water is not a human right” and “thinks that water is made drinkable through ‘refining.'”
Herrera made the comments about water during a 2022 appearance on attorney Nick Rekieta’s Rekieta Law podcast. The remarks resurfaced as Herrera and Padilla Stout battle to represent Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, left vacant after the resignation of scandal-plagued Republican Tony Gonzales.
Herrera’s comments were in defense of Nestlé after the megacorporation’s former chairman and CEO Peter Brabeck-Letmathe made similar comments in the 2005 documentary We Feed the World. The executive’s claim that recognizing water as a human right represents an “extreme” position eventually went viral, drawing widespread condemnation.
Barbarella’s barbs for Brandon weren’t reserved to the Instagram video alone, however.
“If you’re looking for Brandon Herrera, he’s probably digging up and refining water (you know, like Nestlé does). Or, adding tight T-shirt selfies to his website — TheAKguy.com,” the clip’s caption reads.
JanePAC financially backs environmental advocates running for elected office in the U.S., according to its website. Fonda is a lifelong activist known for championing progressive causes.
“Not in the Lone Star State but desperately want to dash the congressional hopes of Brandon Herrera? Donate what you can to Katy’s campaign and let’s send this water expert packing,” the video’s caption continued.
Padilla Stout, a San Antonio attorney and former public school teacher, also received endorsements in the past 24 hours from two sheriffs in the 23rd — Bexar County’s Javier Salazar and El Paso County’s Oscar Ugarte.
The law enforcement officials from either end of the district appear in a new Padilla Stout campaign video that calls Herrera “sick and dangerous.”
The clip criticizes Herrera for filming himself shooting wooden cutouts of children near Uvalde’s Robb Elementary, calling kids “cum trophies” and mocking veteran suicides.
