More UTSA students have visas terminated as Trump immigration crackdown continues

The Department of Homeland Security has now terminated a total of seven visas of international students tied to the University of Texas at San Antonio as part of the Trump administration’s continued anti-immigrant crackdown.

On Tuesday, UTSA Associate Vice President of Strategic Communication Joe Izbrand confirmed that four current students and three former students enrolled in post-graduation work experience programs had their visas terminated as of press time.

That’s up from the four current or former UTSA international students who had their visas terminated last week.

Izbrand declined to say why the students’ visa statuses changed and directed additional questions to the U.S. State Department.

Although the State Department issues international student visas, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a department within DHS, manages the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). ICE didn’t immediately respond to the Current’s request for comment.

Word of the mounting student visa terminations at UTSA follows a day after the Austin-American Statesman reported that DHS terminated 176 international student visas within the University of Texas system. The total number of affected international students in Texas has now risen to at least 252, according to the Texas Tribune.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services last week announced it was monitoring “antisemitic activity on social media” among foreign students or anyone applying for legal status. However, the feeds have even justified some terminations of international student visas by linking them to minor traffic tickets and roommate disputes, according to USA Today.
