Despite releasing endorsements of five other candidates in San Antonio’s June 7 runoff election, tech entrepreneur-turned-mayoral hopeful Beto Altamirano declined to endorse either Gina Ortiz’s Jones or Rolando Pablos for mayor.
On Wednesday, Altamirano – who finished third with 12% of the vote in May’s citywide election – launched the Plan 210 PAC, a political action committee dedicated to supporting candidates aligned with his campaign’s vision for San Antonio.
Plan 210 PAC released endorsements of progressive candidates in the runoff’s council races, including incumbent Sukh Kaur (District 1), Ivalis Meza Gonzalez (District 8), Angi Taylor Aramburu (District 9) and both Ric Galvan and Kelly Anne Gonzalez, who are in the District 6 runoff.
Notably absent: any endorsement in the mayoral contest.
“These candidates were endorsed not just because of their policy positions but because they demonstrated a commitment to responsive, transparent and community-centered leadership,” Altamirano said in a statement. “Each of them articulated clear plans to engage residents meaningfully, ensure accountability and govern in partnership with the community.”
Former Altamirano campaign manager Andrew Solano told the Current that Plan 210 PAC sent questionnaires to both Jones’ and Pablos’ campaigns asking them what San Antonio’s policy priorities should be. Although San Antonio’s mayoral race is officially nonpartisan, Altamirano is a Democrat, Solano added.
“Gina’s team responded, saying that Beto should be supporting her anyways because she’s a Democrat,” Salano said.
Additionally, Pablos’ campaign reached out shortly after the primary in a bid to court Altamirano, or at least have a sit-down with the third-place finisher, according to Solano. Jones’ camp made no such effort.
“You would have thought that Gina would have done the same thing, and it just never happened,” Solano said.
Altamirano’s snub of Jones appears to be the latest she’s received from local leaders whose policy objectives would otherwise seem to align with hers.
Council members Manny Pelaez, Adriana Rocha Garcia, Melissa Cabello Havrda and John Courage — all of whom also ran for mayor — have declined to endorse either Jones or Pablos. Outgoing Mayor Ron Nirenberg also said he won’t be endorsing a candidate.
Courage, who finished with nearly 6% of the vote in the May election, wrote in a leaked email obtained by the Express-News that Jones “has Zero personality to get elected, and that’s her cross to bear,” .
“I can’t advocate for anyone who I don’t believe is qualified to become our next mayor,” Courage continued, according to the daily.
Polls in the runoff are open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. June 7. Residents can check voter registration status and polling site information on the Bexar County Elections Department’s website.
