Tejano singer-turned-congressional candidate Bobby Pulido got big news this week after the Cook Political Report shifted its forecast in the race for Texas’ 15th Congressional District one more notch in his direction.
The nonpartisan newsletter that analyzes federal elections, and political trends changed its forecast in the race from “leans Republican” to “tossup” after new polling found Pulido and Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz in a virtual tie.
Some polls even have Pulido in the lead.
That’s pretty significant, considering Trump won the district, which was redrawn by the GOP-controlled state legislature last year, by 18 points in 2024. De La Cruz also won reelection that same year by 14 points.
Even so, Pulido’s celebrity status in the Valley, as well as strong Democratic enthusiasm amid high gas and food prices, appears to be resonating in the Latino-majority district, the Cook Report wrote.
The singer isn’t without baggage, though.
Pulido has a history of crass social media posts and a convicted sex offender once played in his band. Even so, attacks from De La Cruz and her allies haven’t stuck like they’d hoped.
Texas voters have until Oct. 5 to update their voter registration in the upcoming 2026 midterms. Early voting runs Oct. 19-30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
