Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa isn’t giving up on her quest to debate Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.
On Tuesday, Hinojosa’s team sent Abbott proposed terms for a debate scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday in front of the Texas Governor’s Mansion.
While Abbott hasn’t said whether he’ll participate, Hinojosa’s team said she plans to show up and hold an event regardless.
Under Hinojosa’s proposed terms, FOX 7 Austin journalist Rudy Koski would moderate. Even so, Hinojosa’s camp said it’s open to moderators from other news organizations that previously offered to host a debate.
“Texans deserve to hear a plan for Texas where we secure the American Dream by saving our public schools and putting money into people’s pockets,” Hinojosa said in a statement. “They deserve to believe in a Texas that rewards hard work and takes care of its people.”
Indeed, Abbott has rejected four separate invitations from Texas-based new outlets to debate Hinojosa.
This latest invitation comes days before early voting starts.
What’s more, Abbott finds himself in a tricky position as he seeks an unprecedented fourth term, with some polls showing him in a statistical tie with Hinojosa.
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton, in a leaked audio recording shared by Rolling Stone, said the governor’s race is “still close,” despite Abbott outspending his Democratic rival by a large margin.
Early voting runs Oct. 19-30, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
