Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa’s campaign is heading into the final weeks before the November election with strong polling, a significant shift in the gubernatorial election forecast, and a last-minute fundraising bump.
Over the weekend, prominent news site and data aggregator RealClearPolitics changed its forecast of Hinojosa’s race against Republican incumbent Greg Abbott to a “toss-up.”
The significant shift came after new polling by research and data collection company ReconMR and the Siena Research Institute — both nonpartisan enterprises — showed Hinojosa leading Republican incumbent Greg Abbott by four percentage points.
The poll was conducted between Sept. 8-11 and included responses from 614 likely Texas voters.
“We have made this the most competitive Governor’s race in the country, because Texans are excited about my plan to secure the American Dream by saving public schools and putting money in their pockets,” Hinojosa said.
Hinojosa’s campaign also reported raising more than $1 million in the 36 hours after the poll’s release.
The windfall for Hinojosa, although welcome, is still a drop in the bucket compared to the $67 million war chest Abbott’s campaign reported in the most recent campaign finance filing.
Even so, some political observers have speculated that Abbott isn’t as confident about his attempt at a historic fourth term as governor, pointing to his refusal so far to debate Hinojosa.
Election Day is Nov. 3. Texas residents have until Oct. 5 to update their voter registration status by visiting Vote Texas’ website.
