To kick off San Antonio’s upcoming Cow Parade, the event’s lead artist unveiled its first decorated cow sculpture during a private event Friday at downtown’s AnArte Gallery.
Cow Parade, an annual fundraiser that bills itself as the world’s biggest public art event, takes in multiple cities around the globe. Local creatives are selected to transform life-size fiberglass cows into works of art.
After every Cow Parade, the cows are auctioned off and the proceeds donated to a different charity in each city.
San Antonio Cow Parade partnered with the Christus Children’s Foundation to organize the event. The foundation will be the beneficiary of the event’s art auction.
Lead artist Allison Gregory revealed her cow, Good MOOd, on Friday to artists and Christus Foundation board members.
“Good MOOd was inspired by my involvement with CowParade Austin in 2011,” Gregory said in an emailed statement. “I met some of the children who benefited from the initiative, and when I saw the smiles on their faces it reaffirmed how amazing CowParade is.”
The 40 local artists selected to paint and decorate cows for the Alamo City event will receive their cows over the next two months. When the parade kicks off next spring, the the sculptures will be spread throughout the city with a scavenger hunt map available for interested parties.
This will be the first Cow Parade in San Antonio since 2003.
“My goal for Cow Parade San Antonio was to create a cow that was not only happy and colorful, but a work of art that would exude feelings of joy, hope and peace,” Gregory said.
