San Antonio has some of the state’s most backed-up blacktop, according to a yearend study by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.
The list compiles the 100 most-congested highway segments in Texas for 2024, and the SA area makes a total of 16 appearances.
The highway segment that tops the list for San Antonio is I-35 from Loop 1604 to I-410. Shocker! However, that stretch of roadway only ranked at No. 29 for the state overall.
In other words: San Antonio barely cracked the top third of the list. Yay?
The top end of the list is almost entirely dominated by Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth. However, anyone who’s driven I-35 through downtown Austin will tell you that corridor’s a perpetual parking lot. Fittingly, that siempre shitshow took the list’s No. 3 slot behind worse offenders in Houston and Dallas, in respective order.
Other San Antonio spots that made the list of shame include Culebra Road between Galm Road and — surprise, surprise — Loop 1604, which landed at No. 32. Meanwhile, the portion of Loop 410 that cuts through downtown SA between U.S. Highway 281 and I-10 ranked 38th.
As the Alamo City’s population continues to boom more than any other U.S. metro, it’s a safe bet our rankings on the annual list will only continue to rise. Buckle up.
