If it seems like you just read about San Antonio horror author Johnny Compton holding an event to celebrate the release of a new book, well, that’s likely because you did. The Bram Stoker Award-nominated scribe released his first short story collection back in December.

Now, the prolific Compton is back to introduce the world to his latest novel, Dead First, a chilling cocktail of supernatural terror, detective fiction and Texas history. The book follows a private investigator hired by an enigmatic billionaire to discover why he’s incapable of dying.

Compton will discuss Dead First with San Antonio artist and author John Picacio (The Invisible Parade) this Tuesday at Nowhere Bookshop. A book signing will follow.

“Some are grim, some are fun, some bloodless, and others get pretty gruesome, but for the most part I try to put some emotional weight near or at the forefront,” Compton recently told Nightmare magazine of his literary creations.

Free, 6-7:30 p.m., Nowhere Bookshop, 5154 Broadway, (210) 640-7260, nowherebookshop.com.
