Telemundo TV executive José Alberto Suárez, who once led the Spanish-language broadcaster’s San Antonio operations, died Wednesday in a helicopter crash.

The 25-year media industry veteran was among five Americans who perished in the crash in northeastern Kenya, according to report by Miami’s NBC-TV affiliate. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

At the time of his death, Suárez, 55, served as president and general manager of Florida TV properties Telemundo 31, Telemundo 49 and Telemundo Ft. Meyers-Naples. He held the same dual roles at San Antonio’s Telemundo 60 from 2016 through 2019, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Florida-born Suárez started in the business as a reporter before rising to leadership positions at stations that also included Telemundo 33, Telemundo Fresno, Telemundo Las Vegas and Telemundo Utah, according to NBC. He won multiple Emmys during his career.

In a statement, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said government ministries are looking into the cause the crash, which involved a Eurocopter EC130 B4 operated by Lady Lori Helicopters. All seven people inside the chopper died.
