San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has added another listening session to allow residents to air their concerns about the proposed Spurs arena as support for scheduling a citywide vote on the funding for the project gains momentum.
The session will take place from 6-7 p.m. Friday at Ay Que Chula, 1503 N. Main Ave. Jones’ team is seeking input as she pushes to place the city’s $489 million contribution to the new sports facility on the November ballot.
On Wednesday, District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez posted an Instagram video announcing he plans to vote in favor of Jones’ proposed ballot measure during a special council meeting on the matter scheduled for Monday.
“This deal is shaping up to be horrific, and people deserve to vote based on new information,” McKee-Rodriguez said.
“It’s going to have implications on our bond capacity, which means fewer neighborhood projects and more money that we have to spend for this arena,” the councilman added. “We also need to orient entire departments and staff around this arena project, and these are financial obligations that constrain our ability to spend money elsewhere while we’re already facing a growing deficit.”
Last week, District 6 Councilman Ric Galvan told the Current that he also plans to support the mayor’s proposal.
“I’ll be supportive of having a second vote on it,” Galvan said. “Overall, I think my district has been very skeptical about the arena deal.”
