San Antonio’s Transportation Department celebrated the opening of the Camden Street bike lanes Thursday, a new path intended to make it more convenient for bicyclists to visit the Pearl and other center-city destinations.
Though the new stretch is just 0.4 miles long, the protected bike lanes make it safer and easier for cyclists to reach the Pearl Brewery and its surrounding businesses, city officials said.
“This project demonstrates our commitment to building a transportation system that is safer and more accessible for everyone,” city Transportation Director Catherine “Cat” Hernandez said in a statement. “The Camden Street bike lanes show how the Bike Network Plan introduces a new type of protection for cyclists.”
The lanes also connect residents with a variety of attractions, District 1 Councilmember Sukh Kaur said in a statement.
“The Camden Street bike improvements help connect residents and visitors to neighborhoods, businesses, parks, the Pearl, Museum Reach, and other destinations while encouraging more transportation choices,” said Kaur, whose district includes the Pearl and downtown San Antonio.
The project was a priority in the City’s Bike Network Plan, a long-term initiative to expand the network of bike lanes throughout San Antonio.
Bike lanes also support the City’s Vision Zero SA initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities by creating dedicated space for bicyclists while improving predictability for everyone using the corridor.
The Bike Network Plan proposes the construction of more than 1,700 miles of new or upgraded bike infrastructure in the coming years to be paid for by a variety of funding sources.
