Even as San Antonio and Bexar County grapple with declining property tax revenues, people are still relocating to the area in droves, according to a new report from moving truck-rental company Penske.

Indeed, San Antonio ranked as the nation’s No. 3 most-moved-to city for a second consecutive year, Penske researchers found. The company compiles it annual rankings by identifying the 10 U.S. cities that recorded the highest volume of one-way consumer truck rentals for the year.

    All four big cities in the so-called “Texas Triangle” — the mega-region formed by the Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Austin-San Antonio areas — made the report’s top 10. Houston took the top spot, while Austin came in at No. 7 and Dallas trailed closely behind at No. 8.

    “The consistency of the rankings year after year suggests movers have identified the cities delivering what they want: affordability, community, cultural vibrancy and opportunity for fresh starts,” Penske Senior Vice President of Rentals Kevin Malloy said in a statement.

    Indeed, 80% of Gen Z respondents to a recent Penske poll said they want to live in “fun locations” where they can “pursue their interests.” Another 65% of Gen Zers said they prefer locations that align with their personal values.

    Unfortunately, the Penske report didn’t offer insight into how affordability, community, cultural vibrancy and opportunity for fresh starts each ranked in drawing new residents to San Antonio. Recent data suggests the affordability part of the draw may be slipping away at a rapid clip.
