It’s been nearly a year since San Antonio actor Jonathan Joss was shot to death by a neighbor outside his South Side home.
Although fans continue to mourn the loss of Joss, who voiced the character John Redcorn on the animated series King of the Hill, his final artistic vision is scheduled for release at the end of this year, according to his friend and former colleague Gary Yap.
An Emmy-nominated animator and comic-book creator, Yap worked with Joss on King of the Hill.
Over the weekend, Yap launched a Kickstarter to help cover production and distribution costs of 2 Sides to Every Coin, an unfinished black-and-white comic book he and Joss were collaborating on before Joss’ death.
“[Joss] saw it as The Last Western, where two characters — a cowboy who by all rights should be dead and his partner, a mute Native American outcast prone to visions he can’t control — embark on one last mission together,” Yap wrote on the project’s Kickstarter page. “Both characters are broken, each having suffered immeasurable losses; each seeking their own form of redemption with a ‘worthy death.’”
Off and on, Yap and Joss worked on the project for roughly two years. However, Yap wrote that Joss started doing the heavy lifting on the comic in January 2025. It was around the same time his South Side family residence burned down, killing his three dogs and leaving the actor homeless.
Shortly after losing his house in the fire, Joss married his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales.
“When we last spoke on May 30th, 2025, he said that he and Tristan had found a place in Los Angeles, but he had to swing by his old place in San Antonio to pick up a check first,” Yap wrote. “I told him I didn’t like that idea. I just wrote that last sentence out, and I’ll be damned if I still can’t stop shedding a tear at that thought.”
Tragically, Joss was fatally shot by neighbor Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez while picking up a check from his house on June 30.
Although some initially portrayed the shooting as a hate crime, authorities said it likely stemmed from a long-standing neighborly dispute between Joss and Alvarez.
Alvarez was indicted on a murder charge in November 2025, and his trial was expected to get underway last month. However, the prosecutors and defense agreed to postpone the trial since both sides needed more time to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
Those interested in seeing Joss’ and Yap’s 2 Sides to Every Coin can pre-order on Kickstarter by donating $5 for a digital copy or $10 for a print edition. Those who donate $200 will get a physical copy with a hand-drawn sketch cover by Yap.
“I hope to make you proud, my friend,” Yap said. “Rest in Peace. I got this.”
