San Antonio Democrat Johnny Garcia, who is running to represent Texas’ red-leaning 35th District in Congress, blew past his Trump-backed Republican opponent in second-quarter fundraising
Garcia reported raising $676,140 during the quarter, which ran from April 1 through June 30. He also reported that his campaign has no debt, with $323,108 cash on hand.
Meanwhile, his opponent, Trump-endorsed Republican Carlos De La Cruz, reported raising $532,653 and ended the quarter with $272,388 cash on hand and $116,500 in debt.
“I’m grateful to have the support of grassroots donors and hardworking Texans,” Garcia’s campaign said in a statement. “Every investment in our campaign is proof that Texas voters are ready to elect leaders who will actually lower their costs, fight Washington’s corruption, and keep our community safe.”
Texas 35th District was redrawn last year by the state’s GOP legislature to give Republicans an edge, as previously reported by the Current.
Garcia’s fundraising is good news for Democrats, who believe they can win the redrawn 35th District, even though it’s an “R+4” district, according to Garcia’s campaign.
After being redrawn, TX-35 now includes red-leaning Wilson, Karnes and Guadalupe counties as well as the southeastern edge of more moderate Bexar County.
The former Bexar County Sheriff’s deputy earned the Democratic nomination after defeating Maureen Galindo in the Democratic primary – an unusual opponent who grabbed national headlines after advocating to send “American Zionists” to internment camps.
Her comments received rebuke from national Democrats, who described them as “antisemitic.”
