President Donald Trump is coming to San Antonio on Wednesday — but a couple of protests may overshadow his appearance at Freeman Coliseum.

Trump last week announced plans to appear in the Alamo City to stump for U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton and Carlos De La Cruz, who’s running to represent Texas’ 35th Congressional District. Scandal-plagued Paxton is behind in recent polling as control of the U.S. Senate hangs in the balance.

Even so, it doesn’t appear Trump will receive a warm welcome in Bexar County, which Kamala Harris carried by 9 points in the last election. At least two demonstrations are planned against the president’s appearance.

One protest organized by the Bexar County Democrats is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on Houston Street, across from Freeman Coliseum’s parking lots 1 and 2.

“Apparently [Trump] thinks Texas is in play,” the Bexar County Dems said in a statement. “Let’s let him know that we think he’s the worst president in U.S. history and should RESIGN!”

The San Antonio chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation will hold a protest starting at 5 p.m. at the intersection of Coca-Cola Place and Houston Street.

“San Antonio is a majority Hispanic city, devastated disproportionately by Trump’s campaign of terror through ICE,” the local PSL chapter said in a statement. “With one in four deportations happening in Texas, the horror is palpable. But Texas is not a lost cause. Texas has never been known to sit idly by. Texas — and San Antonio specifically — is filled with a rich history of opposition, fighters and working-class people who resist at every step of the way.”

Adding fuel to the fire is possible City Hall litigation over a proposed ICE processing facility on the East Side — something Cit Council is expected to discuss further this week.
