The Texas Education Agency on Wednesday dropped an investigation into whether San Antonio Independent School District improperly handled a child abuse allegation, district spokeswoman Laura Short confirmed.
“The investigative warnings previously associated with the superintendent’s certification record have also been removed from the Educator Certification Online System account,” Short said.
SAISD officials said the TEA notified them of the investigation on June 15, at which point the state agency requested information about whether the district notified Child Protective Services (CPS) about an alleged incident of child abuse at one of its campuses, as its required to do under law.
The district responded by handing over documentation confirming campus officials contacted CPS, according to Short.
“The circumstances surrounding the investigation were deemed not to warrant further action by this Division at this time and the case is being administratively closed,” the TEA told the district in a letter after receiving the additional details.
The closure of the investigation comes as SAISD Superintendent Jaime Aquino counts down his final weeks at the district.
In March, Aquino abruptly announced plans to retire in January 2027. On Monday, SAISD’s Board of Trustees unanimously appointed district chief of staff Toni Thomson as the district’s interim superintendent, and Aquino is now expected to step down July 1.
