Jorge Borrego, the Republican running to represent San Antonio’s Texas House District 118, issued an apology on Wednesday after decade-old social media posts he made about cocaine resurfaced.
In a statement, Borrego said the tweets — posted in 2013 on the social media platform X, then known as Twitter — “were not admissions nor descriptions of actions I had taken” and that he regrets the language he used.
“I have always been open about growing up in an environment where drug and alcohol abuse were common, and as a kid, I sometimes used dark humor to cope with trauma I did not yet know how to process,” Borrego said. “That context explains the jokes, but it does not excuse them.”
The tweets in question resurfaced Monday when conservative blogger Tony Ortiz of Current Revolt posted about them on X.
In the 2013 tweets shared by Ortiz, Borrego wrote about “snorting some coke,” doing “lines of coke” and “snorting coke off a girl’s ass crack.”
In other tweets from that same year, Borrego used words including “pussy” and called former President John F. Kennedy Jr. a “bitch.”
“I have grown and matured, and those posts do not reflect the husband, father or public servant I am today,” Borrego wrote in his apology.
Borrego is engaged in a tight race against Democrat Kristian Carranza to represent the district, which includes portions of San Antonio’s south and east sides.
Carranza’s campaign has a 17-to-1 cash advantage over Borrego’s, filings show. Texas Democrats have expressed optimism that Carranza, who ran a near-miss campaign for the seat in 2024, can flip the redrawn district this time around.
“The offensive and vile language used by Jorge Borrego makes it clear that he is unfit, unable and undeserving of serving in a position of public trust,” Carranza told the Current. “His own words reveal a disturbing lack of judgment and basic respect for the people he wants to represent.”
Election Day is Nov. 3. Residents can check their voter registration status by visiting the Bexar County Elections Department’s website.
