UT-San Antonio alum and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen on Sunday brought home the first Super Bowl victory in the school’s history.
The Seahawks dominated the field in Sunday’s contest, the most widely watched Super Bowl in history according to CBS News. The New England Patriots put up little offensive resistance, handing the Seahawks a victory with a final score of 29-13.
Woolen was selected by the Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL drafts. Ahead of being drafted into Seattle’s lineup, Woolen was ranked one of the best available cornerbacks on numerous draft prospect lists, landing between 8th and 10th place in Sports Illustrated, Scouts Inc., NFL.com and Bleacher Report rankings.
“This Roadrunner is making history as the first from the program to bring home football’s biggest championship,” UTSA shared in an Instagram post after Woolen’s big win Sunday. “Birds way up for @TariqWoolen!”
The cornerback is originally from Fort Worth and, as a three-star recruit, turned down offers from University of North Texas, University of Houston and Texas State, instead opting to play for the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners.
“Thank you Lord for this team and the journey!” Woolen wrote in a Jan. 26 post after the Conference of Champions, when it was determined the Seahawks would face off against New England in the Super Bowl.
