San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones’ chief of staff, Jenise Carroll, has announced her resignation, becoming the seventh staffer and second chief of staff to depart Jones’ office in less than a year.
Word of Caroll’s departure broke Wednesday night after emails to her from reporters bounced back with an automatic message saying she no longer works for the mayor. The email directed questions to Jones’ executive assistant, Laura Atamosa.
Carroll’s resignation takes effect on May 12, according to the Express-News, However, she informed Jones in her resignation letter that she would use the rest of her paid time off until then, according to the daily.
Carroll’s exit announcement comes a week after Jones’ deputy chief of staff, Pat Wallace, left her post for an early retirement.
Caroll, a former FBI chief diversity officer and retired U.S. Air Force colonel, moved to San Antonio for the job in July after Jones’ first chief of staff, Jordan Abelson, quit about a month after taking the position.
In comments to the Express-News, Carroll said she plans to remain in San Antonio and serve in another capacity.
In a statement to the San Antonio Report, Jones described Carroll as a “superb professional” who brought “focused discipline” to the office.
“I wish Dr. Carroll only the very best in her next steps,” the mayor said.
Jones declined further comment on the situation during a Thursday morning press gaggle following the FIFA World Cup trophy’s stop in San Antonio.
Former Capitol Hill staffer Andrew Fuentes will serve as Jones’ chief of staff in the interim.
