San Antonio police have arrested a suspect on charges that the person threatened the life of Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones over her desire to pause negotiations for Project Marvel, a proposed sports-and-entertainment district that would include a new Spurs arena.

SAPD officials said officers arrested the suspect at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening after receiving a tip that the individual commented “we need to kill the mayor” during a discussion on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The discussion centered around the plan for the Project Marvel development.

Undercover officers took the suspect into custody without incident, according to SAPD. The person was booked on a charge of retaliation, a third-degree felony and can result in up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, department officials added.

The tip about the allegedly threatening tweet came from City Public Service, San Antonio’s city-owned utility, police also said.
