The San Antonio Police Department has indefinitely suspended Officer Holvin M. Perez-Ortiz Jr. after he was charged with roughing up a family member during an argument last Christmas Eve, disciplinary records show.

Perez-Ortiz was charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member after the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident, according to police documents. SAPD handed down the officer’s indefinite suspension, which is tantamount to a firing, April 10, the paperwork states.

Disciplinary records don’t identify Perez-Ortiz’s family member but allege she called authorities on the afternoon of Dec. 24, 2024, to report that the off-duty officer “choked her and threw her on the stairs.” She told deputies who answered the call that Perez-Ortiz grabbed her by the neck and hurled her down, causing her face to strike a stair, the document indicates.

Perez-Ortiz’s action and subsequent arrest violated police conduct rules and “brought reproach and discredit on himself and the San Antonio Police Department,” disciplinary records state.
“Officer Perez-Ortiz’s actions render his continuance in office detrimental to effective law enforcement and the needs of the San Antonio Police Department,” the document continues. “The law and sound community expectations recognize that there is good cause for depriving Officer Perez-Ortiz of his position.”
